THE BONE ORCHARD

CHAPTER ONE
The Letter That Smelled of Rot
The envelope arrived on a Tuesday, sandwiched between a gas bill and a final notice from the university, and Dr. Mira Vance almost threw it away.

She was in the kitchen of her cramped Brooklyn apartment, the kind of place where the walls seemed to close in a little more each winter and the radiator coughed like a dying man. Her coffee had gone cold forty minutes ago. She hadn't touched the toast. Her eyes, red-rimmed and exhausted, scanned the pile of mail with the mechanical disinterest of someone who had stopped hoping for good news a long time ago.

It was the smell that stopped her.

Not the faint aroma of mildew that clung to everything in the building. Not the bitter scent of old coffee grounds or the metallic tang of the city air that seeped through the cracked window frame. This was something else. Something wrong.

Like wet earth after a thunderstorm. Like the underside of a rock you hadn't turned over in years. Like the inside of a grave.
