Booboo the elephant was a creature of gentle habits.
His enormous feet, soft as suede cushions, made almost no sound as he ambled down the dusty, sun-baked road that wound through the heart of the savanna. With every step, his trunk swayed in a rhythmic, easygoing arc, occasionally plucking a stray blade of high grass to munch on as he contemplated the afternoon.
He was so lost in the quiet joy of the walk that he nearly missed the tiny figure standing squarely in the middle of his path.
Booboo pulled his trunk back and adjusted his gait, coming to a soft stop just inches from a field mouse. The mouse, whose coat was the color of toasted wheat, stood on his hind legs, paws tucked neatly against his chest. He didn't look afraid; in fact, he looked quite expectant.
"Good afternoon, traveler," the mouse squeaked, his voice surprisingly resonant despite his size. "The wind is blowing toward the Whispering Gorge today. It seems a perfect day for a journey, don't you think?"
Booboo blinked his long-lashed eyes and let out a soft, rumbling huff of amusement. "I suppose it is," the elephant replied, his voice deep and warm. "I’m Booboo. Are you heading that way, little friend?"
"I am Barnaby," the mouse said with a jaunty tilt of his head. "And I would be honored to accompany someone with such a steady pace. My legs are small, but my curiosity is vast."
Booboo chuckled, a sound that seemed to vibrate through the very ground. He lowered his trunk, curling the tip into a cozy, sturdy platform. With a grateful nod, Barnaby scampered up and settled comfortably between the folds of Booboo’s ears, finding a perfect vantage point.
